Just south of Frankenmuth’s city limits is a rural ranch-style home bursting with family holiday treasures, old and new. Son David, since about age 12 years, has involved himself with decorating the home for numerous holidays, and now as a graduate of Kendall College for Art and Design he continues to create ways to enhance family keepsakes for a warm holiday ambiance.
Each of the main rooms features valued collections of a Bradford Exchange Thomas Kinkade Christmas Tree Village, Hallmark Jingle Pals Snowmen or a Willow Tree nativity set accompanied by a custom-made manger from Bronner’s of Frankenmuth. Twenty-two years of collecting annual ornaments from Bronner’s decorates the main Christmas tree as well as other ornaments unique to Bronner’s. Complete your tour by enjoying the holiday décor surrounding the home including a large manger made by David’s grandfather, sheltering large nativity figures in the front yard and water features out back observed from the great room. This mid-century modern gem was originally built in 1955 for Marv and Marge Engel. Designed by local architect Red Beach, who studied under the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, the home was considered well ahead of its time for Frankenmuth in the 1950s.
In 1996, Marv and Marge’s adopted daughter, Heidi Knieling, moved back into the home with her husband, Ken, and their four young sons. What was meant to be a temporary stay while building a new house quickly became permanent, as Heidi felt drawn to remain in the home where she had grown up, in addition to its prime location in Frankenmuth. However, when the family learned they were expecting their fifth child, they knew more space was needed. Local builder Bob Baker was entrusted with the addition and renovation, carefully preserving the mid-century modern character of the home. Two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a garage were added, blending seamlessly into the original design.
Heidi and Ken often remark that while living through a major renovation with children was quite the adventure, they remain deeply grateful for the blessing of raising their family in such a meaningful place. Many longtime Frankenmuth residents still remember Marv and Marge and share in the joy of seeing the next generation live in the home. Another special detail is that their street, once called Mill Street, was renamed shortly after the Knielings moved in to “Gunzenhausen”— Heidi’s birthplace and Frankenmuth’s Sister City in Germany. The Knieling family is honored to open their home for the Holiday Home Tour.
As you visit, they hope you experience the warmth, peace, and joy of the season, and above all, the spirit of Christmas—the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Merry Christmas and God’s Blessings from Ken and Heidi Knieling
