The Beginning

What began as a group of Frankenmuth housewives in 1954 to serve their families, their community, and God. The small group eventually became something larger and more productive.

1955
Raising Funds

This small group of women spearheaded a drive to raise funds for an outdoor community swimming pool in Memorial Park. That same year the City Beautification Committee was organized and these women were called upon to be involved. They assisted the CBC by planting petunias all along Main Street, Genesee Street, Jefferson Street, and the triangle park at the corner of Jefferson and Weiss Streets and they funded decorations for the entrance signs to the town.

1963
Bus Tours

The Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival began in 1959 as a celebration of the original Fischer Hotel becoming the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn. During the week-long event, the women offered free city tours of Frankenmuth, driving the visitors around in their own cars. Eventually, the car dealerships in town offered station wagons to the club for this endeavor. Throughout the years the club continued to offer step-on guided bus tours of the city to visitors arriving in coaches. The fees collected were given to the city to purchase more flowers, trees, and shrubs.

1964
Christmas in Frankenmuth

A life-sized Nativity scene was installed in the downtown park by Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth for the 1964 Christmas season and the club’s next big project was hanging strings of lights on the trees surrounding the Nativity scene. Every year the women met to clean the wires and bulbs, test them and replace any burned-out lights. Every November they took their own ladders and climbed as high as they could to hang the lights on the trees.

James E. Wickson Library

The informal little club was garnering more attention as other women joined their efforts and the Frankenmuth Women’s Club became their official name. They were the driving force behind getting the city their own library. In 1973, the Wickson- Link Memorial Foundation gave a large financial gift to the library fund in memory of James E. Wickson, Frankenmuth’s first city mayor. That gift made building a library possible and members of the Frankenmuth Women’s Club went door-to-door asking for additional funds to complete and furnish it. In 1974, The James E. Wickson Memorial Library was built at the corner of Franklin and Tuscola streets. In 1979, the Women’s Club bought additional furnishings for the library, and during the ’80s, purchased computer software, shelving, and additional books. The club still donates funds annually.

Geranium Fundraiser

The club began selling geraniums to the community as another fundraiser, which continues today. They purchased the Jaws of Life for the fire department and later donated funds to upgrade the system. They also donated funds to help purchase an ambulance for the city. They began a high school scholarship fund for several young graduating seniors each year and donated funds to help build the high school track.

1988
Making Progress

The club began sponsoring free concerts in Churchgrove Park. They were a huge success and soon outgrew the area so the women began fundraising efforts to build a permanent bandshell in a city park. Major donors for the bandshell were the Frankenmuth Women’s Club, the City of Frankenmuth, Frankenmuth Mutual Insurance Co, Ron Groh, Walter, and Maria Palmer, the Koester Family, Star of the West Milling Co., Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, First of America Bank, Frankenmuth IGA/Ben Franklin, McClellan Properties, Emil Rummel Insurance, Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, and Mike Young-Olds-GMC. The grants received came from the 1995 Michigan Equity Program, Wickson-Link Foundation, Nickless Memorial Foundation, Greater Frankenmuth Area Foundation, Saginaw Community Foundation, and Morley Brothers. Seventy-five patio stones and more than 50 bricks were purchased by community businesses and families in support of the project.

1991
Preparing for Christmas

The Frankenmuth Women's Club had the thankless task of testing hundreds of feat of Christmas bulbs strands and their bulbs. About a dozen women met in the basement of City Hall and tested the lights brought to them by Dale, "Munchy" Meachfeild. The lights illuminated several city parks.

1992
Marque for Fisher Hall

A marque for Fisher Hall was a gift from the Frankenmuth to the Frankenmuth Historical Association.

Palmer Schau Platz

The Palmer Schau Platz was dedicated in Memorial Park and ready for the Summer concerts in June. Three years later, with help from the Walter and Maria Palmer Foundation, a dressing room was added to the bandshell and the concession building was built. The bandshell was renamed the Palmer Schau Platz in honor of their benefactors. Soon after the bandshell opened, the club obtained funds from the Wickson-Link Foundation to cover half the cost of a 10,000 square foot playground called Kid’s Kingdom. Donations from businesses and families brought in the remainder. More than 700 volunteers signed up for the four-day community construction effort. Members of the Women’s Club kept the volunteers hydrated and helped build the playground with other residents.

2000
Edelweiss Award

The club began their Edelweiss Award honoring a Frankenmuth woman who has distinguished herself in the areas of education, civic development, and social improvement.

2004
